avocado troubles
hi all,
i've got 2 young (approx 10 month old) avocado plants. they've been growing well since i planted them, but recently they've started developing... what i hope is a curable problem. the lower leaves started becoming brown and dry, as in they've started dying, and slowly this brown is spreading up both the plants. even leaves which have sprouted not too long ago have brown developing, not from the edges like how normal leaves die, but from smatterings of brown from the centers of the leaves. i'm not a very experienced gardener but i've gotten attached to these plants... |

Scale insect can also cause those symptoms. I got rid of a scale insect infestation on an avocado with an aerosol insecticide - Sybol. (Tree now completely clear of the things, BTW) Look for little dark brown 'limpets' on the stem, and smaller tawny ones on the underside of the leaves. -- Rusty Emus to: horrid dot squeak snailything zetnet point co full-stop uk http://www.users.zetnet.co.uk/hi-fi/ |

No, they are mites, and you need good eyesight to see them at all. The bright red ones aren't bad for plants. Red spider mite (loosely called red spider) are more usually a dingy yellowish brown with a couple of dark spots. They are much smaller than the red spiders you are talking about, and move more slowly. You will see them as what looks like powder on the undersides of leaves, more thickly along the main vein towards the stalk end. As the infestation increases, they start weaving very fine webs in the angles of the leaf stalks, and the leaf itself may take on a finely mottled appearance (doesn't happen so obviously on thick tough leaves like avocado) before drying out and dying. -- Kay "Do not insult the crocodile until you have crossed the river" |
