writes Does anybody know a source for Egyptian Onions aka Walking Onions? That is Allium cepa var. proliferum - also described as Tree onion, Upstairs onion etc. etc. Ray Warner of Thos. Etty Esquire, Heritage Seedsman & Bulb merchant had them in stock quite recently. Ask for catalogue at: or Tel: 020 8466 6785 -- Alan & Joan Gould - North Lincs. |

Strange name for an onion? I imagine planting them out one day, and the next day finding them at the other end of the garden ;-) Drakanthus. |

Walking Onions
The reason for the name(Also known as tree onions) is that they form a head
of bulbuls in a stalk which as it dies falls over so the next clump to grow is anything from 1 to 2.5 ft away from the first so that if left over a few years they can move several yards. In America they cut the stems and leaves into sections and have them stuffed. -- David Hill Abacus Nurseries www.abacus-nurseries.co.uk |

The message
from "david" contains these words: In America they cut the stems and leaves into sections and have them stuffed. Why would anyone take children to an onion museum? Janet. |

Now I know Welsh onions as Siabion(Shibons) very common here in Wales and
are rather like a shallot but don't bulb up. Rather like what I have had as Perpetual onions. Would be nice if someone out there could come up with a Correct list of names. I have Tree/Walking/Egyptian onions yet have heard that Egyptian onions are also known as Potato onions and form an underground bulb. It gets very confusing. -- David Hill Abacus Nurseries www.abacus-nurseries.co.uk |

There's a lot of information about different onion species in the urg FAQ called the Vegetable and Salad Plant INDEX at: http://www.fuchsiazone.co.uk/veg-index/vegindex.htm Here are some unfinished notes I prepared while researching material for the Veg.Index. If anyone has corrections to suggest or information about the plants named in the 'Query' list at the bottom, I would be very grateful. --------------------------------------------------------------------- The common garden onion is Allium cepa.
