Fence preservatives and climbing plants
Job for this weekend is replacing the fence panels dividing our garden from the neighbour's. Before I put them up I'm likely to give them an extra coat of a preservative to extend their life a bit - it's easy whilst they're off, and they'll not get another coat from me. Not quite sure what to use yet - current choice is between Wickes creosote-substitute, and a big tub of their Timbercare stuff (cheap is good at the moment, unfortunately) - anyone have any experience with either of them? The gardening-related part of the query is this: is either preservative likely to kill or affect any climbing plants that are against the fence, or planted after it's put up? At the moment there's a medium-sized honeysuckle against it (about 5ft high & 6ft across), and I'm thinking of growing a climbing rose and a couple of clematis up to the trestle panels on the top. If they are likely to be affected, how long should I wait before planting them? -- Richard Sampson mail me at richard at olifant d-ot co do-t uk |

AFAIK the current ones being sold are plant friendly, but why not go
and look on the tin, it will say there. Mike |

TBH, because I hadn't even thought that there might be such an advisory note on the tin! You can tell how often I put preservative on my shed or fence :-) Ta, tho. -- Richard Sampson mail me at richard at olifant d-ot co do-t uk |

What it says on the tin is that it's harmless to plants and animals once it's dried. So doing it before putting the panels up would seem to be favourite, no? Steve |
