Default Newbie Q- organic compost as plant food?

Is organic compost, as sold in garden centres etc, an effective food for
plants, eg vegetables? Or is other plant food necessary? I am a bit
confused between the role of rotted manure which I think is an effective
food, and commercial organic compost which I know nothing about.
Thanks for any feedback.
Paul.
