Hi, My allotment is probably twice or 3 time more that I need to feed my
family, or even just keep weed free. Next year I was thinking of setting half to a very low maintainance cash crop..... Any ideas what this should be ? I'm not "that" interested in the money side, as long as it makes some holiday spending money to keep wifey happy. Its more important that whatever crop , it doesn't take too much effort, and fills a space otherwise occupied by weeds. Rich http://www.sh0pz.com |

If you're lucky the vendors will tell you how it's going, and you should get an idea of demand. Fruit may be a good idea, considering the prices of punnets of soft fruit at supermarkets. The previous occupant of my allotment was an old boy living on his own, and he used to grow far too much for himself, and used to take the excess down to the pub in exchange for his beer. I never met him, but I hear he was drunk most nights at this time of year. Steve |

The problem with most "produce" is that it is perishable and low priced.
Consider instead growing plants for other gardeners. They are less perishable and possibly more profitable. Steve Harris - Cheltenham - Real address steve AT netservs DOT com A useful bit of gardening software at http://www.netservs.com/garden/ |

Out the front of our bungalow was a small square field with a broken stone road round it , and on the far corner some low buildings obscured the quarter mile road to the some shops and the pub at the start of the Town proper. My dad used get together a large bouquet of beautiful flowers from his allotment and hide them in the henhouse at the back, also near the near the bungalow . On a Saturday evenings he hid the bouquet in front of his body and walked quickly to the far corner. , then proceeded the quarter mile to the pub. The first short stretch was in full view of the front door and when my mother, a strict Union Methodist, first saw him cross the first field there was hell to play when he came home. (BTW, I never ever, saw my Dad in a "wits out" condition.). She accused him of "playing around" and "having another woman", which he denied and said he always sold the bouquet in the pub. A |

For what it's worth we saw a LOT of places selling pumpkins in USA a couple of years ago. They were piled up by the roadside, someone had built a 'fort' out of them; there were pumpkin 'men' etc. Make a THING of it and you could be onto something good in your area. -- Sacha www.hillhousenursery.co.uk South Devon (remove the weeds after garden to email me) |

Rich http://www.sh0pz.com Some years back there used to be groups devoted to growing their own tobacco. ...Yes it is possible in this country, particularly in the Southern counties or using cloches elsewhere. Perhaps a google search might locate any still extant as they would be a source of info on the methodology and also seed sources etc. Even if you don't use the tobacco yourself I'm sure there would be a demand for it. hmmm, presuming this isn't toungue-in-cheek, not a course of action to be recommended. you _really_ don't want to clash with the enforcement people within HM C&E.... -- Richard Sampson email me at richard at olifant d-ot co do-t uk |

Yes Tobacco was grown, but was sent to a specialist firm for processing, and
then if you wanted to sell it, it would incur duty. You ask for a low input cash crop to grow on an allotment. All I can say is you must have much better security than I have ever heard of before for an allotment, most I know of regularly suffer from "Finger blight". What they would make of a saleable crop sitting there I hate to think. You would be better having a regular surplus every week that you could sell on to a few friends, especially if you are growing "Organically" -- David Hill Abacus nurseries www.abacus-nurseries.co.uk |
