Has anyone else had problems with thieves pinching young buds from their
paeonies? I have two fabulous plants which are very close to our pavement boundary, and I have noticed that a lot of the 'ready-to-burst' buds have suddenly mysteriously vanished - and no, not pulled off, but actually cut neatly from the bush. It makes me very sad, as they are one of my favourite flowers and are so full of blooms this time of year, but this year they are more a mound of green than cerise... Just how low will some people stoop? (and I don't mean stooping to paeony height ;-) ) Jo from deepest Daventry in the Midlands. p.s. And this wasn't a one-off - since noticing it last week, even more have been pruned this week... anyone got any tips on good cctv systems? |

How about some night vision goggles and a good slingshot to learn the buggers? :-) Sam |

The message
from "Jo" contains these words: anyone got any tips on good cctv systems? Have a look in Maplin. If you are really keen on catching the culprit you could link a mini camera (about £50 for a colour one with half-decent resolution) with a p.i.r. detector and connect to your computer, if you have a good deal of spare disc space. You'd have to find a newsgroup which specialises in this sort of thing to get a recommendation for a program to control the recording - you don't want it running all the time. Another thing worth trying, if you suspect the dirty deeds are done in the depths of darkness, is to set a combined p.i.r./QH floodlight so that the sensitive area includes the paeony but no higher, because you don't want it switching on every time someone walks by. Either alone (when it may alert you) or in conjunction with cctv, it would seem a good idea. -- Rusty Open the creaking gate to make a horrid.squeak, then lower the foobar. http://www.users.zetnet.co.uk/hi-fi/ |
