Clematis Tangutica Helios
Xref: kermit uk.rec.gardening:188892
I sowed seeds of Clematis tangutica 'Helios', following seed packet instructions. Germination is supposed to be about 28 days, but now after 28 days there is absolutely no sign whatsoever of any of my seeds germinating. I've sown the seeds in a propagator indoors and have kept the seeds warm and moist. Can anyone give me some hints or tips on growing this clematis from seed? Many thanks. |

clematis from seed? C. tangutica usually germinates well from seed (but this won't come true so there'll be some variation in flower size etc.) My advice is to be patient and don't try to force them. [The large flowered clematis can take years to germinate, more so with stored seed. I always used to sow the seed green - it needed to be pulled off the seedhead, rather than waiting for it to dry and be shed naturally. If you do that, seed sown in September one year would usually germinate the following autumn.] - Tom. |

Hello Jan, Each year I grow 20 or so different Clematis species from seed obtained via various society seed exchanges and seeds taken from my own plants. I have always had good germination from tangutica by simply sowing on top of my normal seed mixture compost, covering the seed with grit and placing in a shaded cold frame. The pots are exposed to all the elements and this helps to break down the germination inhibitors. I sow in January and, from my records, see that plants of tangutica (amongst others) were potted up during May of last year. It is very easy to molly coddle perfectly hardy plant seeds which in many cases require a period of stratification to aid germination. Martin Froggatt. |
