Default Leaves

Could anyone advise me about leaves as I am relatively new to gardening. I
have a huge ornamental cherry tree in my garden which is dropping lots of
leaves at the moment. I have just spent all weekend picking them up off the
grass and have put some in the compost bin and some in black bags to rot
down for next year. My question is whether it is safe to let some leaves
remain on the borders bearing in mind that I have just planted about 50 new
plug plants (mainly ground cover) or is it best to keep these new plants
uncovered?

Within reason , I would try to get them all picked up. Anything left
behind is potentially a home for things which might want to sneak out and
feast on your plants.
