Growing Clematis from seed?
Hi,
I have been gradually increasing my population of Clematis, mainly on the North side of the house, and some are still flowering whilst others are over. One particularly produced a myriad of fluffy seeds which dropped in and around the pot within which it is growing. This prompted a thought: "If the Clematis produces loads of seeds each year, why is my garden not knee deep in Clematis seedlings?". Has anyone grown Clematis from home produced seed? Just wondering if it is possible - I presume you could get all sorts of wierd and wonderful crosses. TIA Dave R -- |

My guess is that the seeds are long-lived and germinate erratically, perhaps only under some conditions. This is a good strategy for a woodland plant. | Has anyone grown Clematis from home produced seed? I have grown some C. vitalba from wild collected seed, but it hasn't flowered yet. Regards, Nick Maclaren. |

I've got a few self seeded tangutica coming up in the cracks in the terrace ;-) Has anyone grown Clematis from home produced seed? Yes - I planted a head of tangutica in the spring in the hope of producing seedlings that weren't stuck in the cracks between paving slabs, and now have 8 sturdy little plants about 8 inches high. I'm going to try with alpina when the seeds are ripe. -- Kay Easton Edward's earthworm page: http://www.scarboro.demon.co.uk/edward/index.htm |

Growing Clematis from seed?
Not home produced seed, but I have had success with clematis alpina seed
brought back from Majorca. I sowed the seeds in JI seed compost, had almost 100% germination the following year and pricked the seedlings out into 9cm pots. I gave most away to friends and kept two which have since both flowered . Seeds of all climbing clematis species are best sown from October, so I am told! Do seeds really know the months of the year? Best of luck. Roscoe ----------------- "David W.E. Roberts" wrote in a message: Hi, Has anyone grown Clematis from home produced seed? |
