Default HELP! Garden infested with false widows.. Any advice?

HI everyone - newbie here. Utterly clueless gardener, my partner does a bit better. We live in Bath, in a 1875 terrace, built on a crazily steep plot. It has a large garden, on 3 tiers. Loads of old stone steps and walls. I appreciate this is prime territory for FBWs, but the entire garden has been taken over. There are thousands of them. Mow the lawn, and they flee in every direction. I know they're relatively harmless, but I'm a severe arachnophobe (thanks, Mum!) and I just can't sit out there. There's no prospect of changing the fundamentals of the garden, so is there anything at all I can try?

HUGE thanks in anticipation!
