Too late to sow chillis?
Hi there,
I am having a new greenhouse delivered in three weeks and I would like to grow chillis, sweet peppers and tomatoes in there (amongst other things). Is it too late to sow chillis, peppers and tomatoes now? I would start them off now on the window sill and then move them to the greenhouse towards end of May. I had a look in my local Gdn Centre and there were no chilli seeds in there at all except for Cayenne Peppers. Can anyone recommend a good internet site to buy chilli seeds? Thanks. -- Mark Allison, SQL Server MVP http://www.allisonmitchell.com ----== Posted via Newsfeed.Com - Unlimited-Uncensored-Secure Usenet News==---- http://www.newsfeed.com The #1 Newsgroup Service in the World! 100,000 Newsgroups ---= 19 East/West-Coast Specialized Servers - Total Privacy via Encryption =--- |

Too late to sow chillis?
Keep looking. My in-laws live in Minnesotta, USA. They have a short, hot
growing season and Chillis do very well where they live - they're only just starting to plant outside. No such luck with cabbage or similar which needs our "no so hot but rather long" growing season. Paul DS. |

Actually, for MOST vegetables, we have a cool and short season :-( It is only the most adapted the low light levels of spring and autumn, and not even they do much growing in winter. No, it is not too late for chillis, though it is pushing it, but I wouldn't bother with sweet peppers. There are addresses in the FAQ for specialist chilli seed merchants. Regards, Nick Maclaren. |

Too late to sow chillis?
I've just sown a few that will live on a very sunny windowsill all summer,
but I put the others in a greenhouse ages ago. Try this link to buy them, I just bought some Thai Sun from them, I had good service. http://www.chileseeds.co.uk/ Charlie. | Thanks for the reply. Why wouldn't you bother with sweet peppers? I They typically need a longer and hotter growing season. OK. I'll sow some today and let you know how they get on. I've only got £1.20 to lose... Yes, I agree! I am going to try sweet peppers this year in both my greenhouse and under plastic on my allotment. I don't think you'll get much other than under-ripe green sweet peppers just grown outside in the UK. Mind you, I am also going to try growing okra (from Marshalls) in my greenhouse too, so I might just be being optimistic. I had limited success with okra a couple of years ago, with seed we bought back from the West Indies (it probably expcted different conditions to what's available in "sunny" Bristol). Finally, you asked for sources of seeds - I can vouch for Simspon Seeds that someone else mentioned (01985 845004, ). I have bought their seeds and plants for several years and they've all done well. I also have quite a few seeds left over and can post them if you want. Finally, don't restrict yourself to your greenhouse. Make use of spare windowsills for any extra chilli plants. The extra warmth indoors may help ripen them and give you a higher overall yield than just the greenhouse. |

Main thing is to pick them young! - they have a great capacity for going stringy. Finally, don't restrict yourself to your greenhouse. Make use of spare windowsills for any extra chilli plants. Mark, Last year I bought some chillie plants from Homebase - Cayenne and Apache. I think it was a towards the end of May. All plants produced bumper crops in my greenhouse so there is still plenty of time. I also bought some other varities from eBay - Hungarian Hot Wax and Jalepeno. Only cost a couple of quid and received 4 healthy plants that also produced well - I think the seller was Jane Lane Nurseries - might be worth a search. Cheers, Ian |
