Glyphosate in winter
Does anyone know how long it takes to work at this time of year? My guess is 1-2 months, but i could be wildly wrong. Regards, Nick Maclaren. |

This year with some weeds still in active growth and flowering I expect 3-4 weeks to show some yellowing although I haven't tried it myself. -- Regards, Martin Brown |

The one problem is that you need dry foliage and a few hours of dry after spraying, and here in S. Wales we haven't had that sort of weather for what seems like a couple of months. I have plenty that wants spraying but I'd sink so far into the ground if I put a knapsack sprayer on my back............ David @ a very wet side of Swansea Bay |

This is from http://www.smallgrains.org/springwh/...weed/weed.html "9. Glyphosate applied in cool/cold weather will kill weeds – it just takes longer. Ideal temperatures for applying most POST herbicides are between 65 and 85 F. Weeds may be killed slower when temperatures remain below 50 F. Cold weather is a stress to plants. AMS and NIS can be used overcome the reduced control of stressed plants. Absorbed glyphosate will remain in the plant until warm temperatures cause weeds to resume glyphosate translocation to growing points." (NB AMS = Ammonium sulfate; NIS = Nonionic surfactant) What I find most interesting here is something I've often wondered about, and has been answered by the final sentence. It's something I've hoped would be true, especially in relation to trying to eradicate Spanish bluebell. If sprayed several times in spring and summer, would the glyphosate be retained in the bulbs and reactivated when the bulb comes into growth the next spring? -- Jeff |

Hi Nick, I usually spray around maples in Winter as there's no chance of accidentally contaminating the foliage. In my experience it's around 6 weeks before there's much effect, but that's with frost; might be a little faster in the current warm conditions. I don't think the target has to be completely dry although no doubt it helps. -E -- Gardening in Lower Normandy |

Glyphosate in winter

Thanks everyone, too, it was worth doing, because my vegetable patch was turning into a lawn due to the mild winter. Either glyphosate or its effects certainly overwinter because, if you spray lesser bindweed with too strong a conentration, it will form a 'lump' when it next regrows and for a year or so thereafter. Also, strawberries sprayed in autumn will show no signs until the next late spring, when they go yellow and fail to thrive. Regards, Nick Maclaren. |
