Well, I'm back
Having retired, I had to change newserver, which (inter alia) meant upgrading my newsreader. Oh, God, what a heap of manure :-( Regards, Nick. |

Hope you're happy with your newsreader now. I suggest you put that heap of manure on the compost heap ;~). -- Spider On high ground in SE London Gardening on heavy clay |

Welcome to the land of the non-idle, where you'll soon wonder how you ever found time to work. Why did you choose to use TRN4 as your newsreader? As you are using Linux, why not use something like Thunderbird or Pan? -- Jeff |

This is an attempt to reply using thunderbox, since trn seems to be bizarrely broken as far as following-up goes. Let's see if THIS works. Because, configured and run in rn mode, it has the least loathesome ergonomics. I tried pan, and it's unspeakably ghastly (even if it worked reliably, which it didn't). Thunderbird is a (nasty) mail client, not a newsreader; while I have configured it as the latter, it's ergonomics are horrible, too. Note that I don't object to competently designed pictorial interfaces, and once used to use xrn, but anything based on (now wash my mouth out with soap) curses or its camp followers is even worse than pan. I quite hated pan in the beginning but after several years have gotten used to it. It is much more reliable than Tbird although I still use the latter for mail, it really is useless for ngs. Welcome back and congrats on your retirement. Now you'll have time to explore all those network topologies in topiary. -E -- Gardening in Lower Normandy |

It's mandatory featuritis, for a start. I absolutely LOATHE threaded interfaces, because they make it hell to glance at new messages, and later respond to the new ones when time permits. Just stepping back (or forward from the last place) is so much easier. Using tags is a pain. It claims that it is displaying in black on white, but actually is mainly royal blue and a hard-toread grey for my responses. And its handling of long lines is seriously broken. But as go curses-based readers, here are three screen-shots of SLRN.
