Is this getting data off a dead phone that has no connectivity (phone or wireless)? If there is any connectivity, then syncing with a OneDrive? What is the difference between a US and UK micro usb? cheers Andy |

U/S. Unserviceable. If it is merely physical damage to the connector, getting some suitable hardware hacker to take it apart and wire in a new one would be the simplest solution. One other thought. Is it so dead that you can't copy the files to the sim? (Not sure if this is possible anyway). -- regards andy |

Oops Another thought - there is an app called 'Files' that allows you to share via bluetooth, onedrive, whatsapp, etc. Not sure if any of the native stuff on the phone allows this - or indeed whether any of it is accessible on the phone. If it is actually dead, I suspect even a usb wouldn't do much. Finally (I think) some phones actually use something like a micro usb card internally for storage. Don't know if the Lumias do or not. And if it does, I'm not sure how easy it would be to access the content if you get it out of the phone. Other than that, one of the specialist data retrieval companies might be able to help, at a price - depends on what the damage is and how important the data is. -- regards andy |

I forget sometimes not everyone uses it! By the time I got involved the phone was dead, it had apparently not been charging for sometime and the Lumia 800 has a reputation of being temperamental if allowed to have a completely flat battery. Why my daughter didn't back the data up I have no idea. But Blue tooth and wireless are both ruled out as it wont turn on. Anyway on examination I can see the actual USB connection is damaged, so yes it could be repaired but quotes are for more than the phone cost and anyway she doesn't want anything more to do with Nokia. I was surprised when I couldn't find a removable memory card but its apparently built in (stupid idea really) I just wondered if the memory store is removable if one dismantles the phone, but I guess its not something most people would ever do! Its Photos that she wants back. -- Charlie, Gardening in Cornwall Holders of National Collections of Clematis viticella and Lapageria rosea cvs http://www.roselandhouse.co.uk |

There are a couple of net sites that crack open devices to show you what is inside and how to get at it. I think I still have my daughter's 800 which died down a toilet. Seems like this happens a lot with girls, keeping the phone in a back pocket. -- regards andy |

I don't know about that particular model but there is usually some quirky. Hold this button in for two minutes whilst whistling "Rule Britannia" and crossing your toes that will force a hard system reset. You need to look up the exact description of which buttons and for how long on the internet. It won't work with the phone on charge so if the battery is stone dead you are out of luck. It will blink its LED at you after about 10s if it is willing to play. I have done it for friends generic dead Android devices with mixed results. One went into native Chinese mode! Another (my own personal phone) refused to do anything and was returned under warrantee to the maker for a swap. I found out about the magic key chords for hard system reset from their helpline. I don't know if doing this will trash any user memory storage in the phone - it might well! I suspect everything on the dead phone is now lost forever unless you are prepared to take it to an expensive data recovery service. -- Regards, Martin Brown |

For my android smartphone, there's a double-secret "press this, face Tokyo, bow three times, press that for 3.14 seconds...." startup for just this situation. Don't ask how I know... If you can get it to wake up and ask for a pint, you can install an app that allows bluetooth and/or wifi access to the files. I like."my phone explorer," written and supported by an Austrian guy, so I can have direct access to memory, including the micro-SD in installed about 10 minutes after leaving the phone store. -- Gary Woods AKA K2AHC- PGP key on request, or at home.earthlink.net/~garygarlic Zone 5/4 in upstate New York, 1420' elevation. Posted to this Newsgroup from the W of London, UK Thank you everyone who has given time to my problem. I was aware of the hard reset buttons but this wipes the memory so would be counterproductive. Bob I had seen the Video but the phone is so dead the computer doesn't know its there. However the second link you posted looks interesting (I hadn't found it in my searches) so I will ask daughter if she wants to give it a go. -- Charlie, Gardening in Cornwall Holders of National Collections of Clematis viticella and Lapageria rosea cvs http://www.roselandhouse.co.uk |
