I am doing some gardeing for a friend who has a Yucca...about 7-8 foot tall. I t has a center "stem" plus a few baby ones coming from it lower down..but not the bottom.. My freind whould like me to cut it in half and replant it....I jhave no knowledge of Yucca's at all... Can I cut the middle bigger one out and replant that.? Leaving the lower newer babies where they are.? Many thanks for you help in advance. |

Most Yucca I've seen growing outside in the UK are not that tall, make lots of side growths so they actually spread out and they flower beautifully with tall spikes of large cream flowers. The Cordyline grows more like a palm, flowers like a palm, and is known as a Cabbage Palm (although it isn't a palm). -- Regards. Bob Hobden. Posted to this Newsgroup from the W of London, UK |

A picture would help identify whether it's a yucca or a cordyline. Don't post here directly, but use an image-hosting site such as tinypic or dropbox etc. Images of yuccas he http://tinyurl.com/qbafsdf Images of cordylines he http://tinyurl.com/qeo72zr Or as you use Gardenbanter to get here they have their own method of you being able to post a photo to their site and then post a link to it on this Newsgroup. I understand the instructions are on their site somewhere but cannot be more helpful as I don't use them. -- Regards. Bob Hobden. Posted to this Newsgroup from the W of London, UK |

I will take a photo when I go there this week... is there anyway I can tell the difference by looking at it.? Didnt see it flower last year.? These are more like what those two plants grow like under UK conditions... first the Cordyline which can grow into a decent sized tree and flowers are in large bunches but individually small, seeds loved by Starlings. https://davisla.files.wordpress.com/...3740917364.jpg The Yucca tends to grow short and spread under UK conditions, the tallest I've seen outside had a trunk about 1 metre tall. http://www.gardeningknowhow.com/orna...s-outdoors.htm To answer your original question, yes you can cut off the plant either way, but your friend may want to reconsider being how attractive a fully grown Cordyline can be if that is what they have. -- Regards.
