It's good entertainment doing it with only two planks on programmes like Top Gear, but time consuming and a bit silly in the real world. Perhaps that's all they had available. Military funding cuts etc....! Possibly and no plans to replace the road because of national budget cuts? More & longer planks would certainly be cheaper! A sort of mini King Harry ferry, perhaps! as thick as two short ones? :-) Maybe perforated steel plates would be a better solution. The sort used for temporary runways in post war Europe. Is that the same as a Bailey Bridge? No that's a prefabricated kit bridge made out of girders. You sometimes see the perforated steel sheets on the roof racks of 4WDs. There's a photo here. http://imageshack.us/a/img443/2581/11jj.jpg The pieces can be made to interlock with each other in order to cover a large area like a runway. http://www.etp-trade.de/psp-history.html Thank you! -- Sacha www.hillhousenursery.com South Devon |
