Yesterday I saw a marvellous hover fly in the meadow, it had carmine red
wings that appeared to be edged in black. I've never seen one like this
before.

Quick searching on google didn't turn it up, does anyone know the species?

Sounds like burnet moth or possibly cinnabar moth

Hm, the colour is about right, but it really hovered and darted; most un-
moth-like. Also seemed to have a beaky head, if you know what I mean.

The only reddish hoverfly I know of is the large hornet mimic
