Hi

For a few years I grew Buddleja. Loved the scent and all the butterflies
it attracted, but it just got out of control in the end

So I got rid of it and this year I'm trying a Blue Chip Buddleja in a pot
instead.

Has anyone got any experience of these? I've been very disappointed so
far. I potted it up in a large pot in March, and I pruned it hard to a
couple of inches on the stems like I always used to do with the full size
Buddleja. Now it's grown back and it's in leaf, but it's barely a foot
tall and absolutely no signs of any flower spikes coming.

I know it's a Dwarf, but I was expecting about 4 ft, not 1 ft! And some
flowers.

Can anyone advise? Is it expected that it doesn't flower in the first
year? Should I try pruning again now? Or should I prune less hard in
early spring next year?

I've had Camberwell Beauty in a pot since this time last year. Didn't do
much at all last summer, but now it's about 2 feet tall and I THINK I
can see spikes beginning to develop. Very thirsty I've noticed.

Presumably it was a new, young plant, so perhaps it didn't need pruning?

I have several of the "Buzz" varieties, some in pots, some in the
ground. I don't prune them as hard as I did with the biggies - down to
about a foot but always to buds (the biggies produced buds even if I
pruned to a "stalk" but the small ones don't). They've been reliable
flowerers but this year they are a bit late, like everything else!

Don't reprune now, though as it will be too late. Give them a chance.

Having read all threads so far, I'm wondering if the leafy growth it's
produced so far isn't ripe enough to produce flowers. Are the stems
still green, or woody/becomming woody? If I were you, I'd give it a
Tomorite (or similar) *filip* feed, which is a quick-acting foliar feed,
which might induce it to flower this year.

Although I don't grow this form of Buddleia, It certainly sounds as if
one should hold back with the pruning until spring.
