Default Best Time to Plant Chilli Seeds

Hi,

I planted a load of different chilli plants this year, and whilst all
grew into big flourishing plants, the fruits appeared to late and none
ripened enough to eat. I planted them as seeds in april/may.

I'd like to try again this year. What do the Chilli experts in this
group recommend as the best time to sow in order to enjoy a good crop?
I live in Hampshire.

I planted mine late, but in a conservatory - and, even then, they
didn't grow for ages because of the vile weather. They are best
planted indoors, and put out only in late May, but not everyone
has somewhere light to grow them.

Depending on the space available, any time from the end of February
onwards.

Regards,
Nick Maclaren.

Do you have a glasshouse, or a heated propagator?

It's also the variety you grow that determines how long it takes to get a
crop. I know Nick and I both grow "Thai Dragon" (hot) and that seems to
guarantee a crop even in a year like this, although we didn't get too many
red ones, we got some and half a carrier bag of green from 5 plants but we
did have them under cloches for some weeks at the end. Some of the other
varieties seem to need a greenhouse to prolong the season and provide more
warmth.

Cayennes seem to work well in west London - I still have chilies in
the frezeer from 2010.

I sowed Naga Jalockia seed early this year (2012) and kept them in a
propagator. Most of them damped off. One survived which I am hoping
to overwinter in my conservatory (Which is normally unheated, but
there are fallback provisions should the temperature therein fall
below 5C.)

I contine to worry about my Curry Leaf plants which have suffered from
scale insects and no doubt other pests.

Regards
JonH

Thanks for the replies.

Last year I planted the seeds in a minipropogator in the airing cupboard with 100% germination success, and all the plants went on to grow well, but the fruit was too late.

This year I'm thinking of sowing in the same way, but in February, then growing in the conservatory until late may. Is feb too early?

Normally with seeds you get far more than you want so why not try sowing
some in Feb and then more in March and see what works best for you.
Are you planting them into open ground or keeping them in pots?
I'd grow a few in pots so that you can move them into the conservatory
in the Autumn and prolong their growing season.

I might try the same system I use with sweet peas. Sow in polystyrene
cups, put the cups in freezer bags, and hang them on a south facing
wall. With the bag handles tied at the top, they don't need watering
till the spring
