Can anyone recommend a bird feeder on a metal pole which sticks into
the soil. I have seen one in a garden which looks good. I have seen one on the internet which is made by Gardman but I cannot work out whether it needs a base or whether it goes into the soil. Any advice please? Pam in Bristol |

I suspect the amount they actually get per sale isn't that much. The birds here would go hungry if I still bought their bird food! In the pre build-my-own days, I'd buy a bird table on feet or something on a stand from a reasonably-priced place and simply use a judiciously applied saw and/or chisel if needed plus a dab of paint or preservative. The metal pole thing is still (after 20 years) doing service in my sister's garden. Ernest Charles stock a wide range of bird feeders and accessories such as feeder station poles and they are very reliable from my experience. http://www.ernest-charles.com/shop/B...ders-Home.html The Droll Yankee range of feeders is very good and long lived, we still have one of what they now call their 'Lifetime' feeders in daily use that is nearly twenty years old. If you are going to mounting a feeder or feeders on a pole please remember that squirrels will easily scale any pole and that an anti-squirrel baffle will be necessary if you use standard feeders. http://www.ernest-charles.com/shop/info_GAR55A.html When I first decided to mount a feeder on a pole there was not much choice so I bought a length of 15mm copper plumbing pipe which I stuck in the lawn and mounted the feeder on top. We now have a length of 22mm copper pipe with four good hanging basket brackets fitted to the top and a variety of feeders hanging from them. -- rbel |

It took the squirrel a day to work it out and I filmed his antics. He hasn't been back so hopefully he thinks it's more trouble than it's worth. He didn't like being dive bombed by a robin either. Vicious little birds! |

I can vouch for the agility of the squirrel, Regularly, daily, a large squirrel runs along an overhead pvc covered aerial cable with absolutely no effort at all, for a distance of about 120 feet.. Fascinating to watch. Bill |

CJ WildBird Foods - Bird Feeders I think is what you want - a feeder on a pole. You can add squirrel baffles to the mix, get a device that fits in the top to allow you to hang two or more feeders, extensions for the pole if you want it higher, etc.

In article , kay
writes CJ birdfood do a good range. Not cheap, but the different bits fit together well with a lot of interchangeability, and the metal ones are robust (perches tend to crack on the plastic models. 'CJ WildBird Foods - Bird Feeders' (http://tinyurl.com/cvpx39d) I think is what you want - a feeder on a pole. You can add squirrel baffles to the mix, get a device that fits in the top to allow you to hang two or more feeders, extensions for the pole if you want it higher, etc. I have, over the years Kay, bought four from CJ and whilst their food is brilliant their bird feeders stands need a bit of tweaking. What happens is that the pole gets water inside whatever you do and then when it freezes it starts to push up the connections (even though there is a hole at the bottom of the pole) and in the end the whole shooting match bursts off the bottom pole one night and takes all the bird feeders etc. with it!! Now i buy CJ feeders and food but got a simple 'gardman' something or other which is just a plain pole in the ground rather than the spokes etc., which anyway were a fiddle to mow round. -- Janet Tweedy Dalmatian Telegraph http://www.lancedal.demon.co.uk |

In article , kay
writes "spokes etc" - were we talking about a different CJ feeder? Mine is just a simple pole. -- kay Mine were the pole with the splayed out arms for a stand I thought it would be more stable as we put very large feeders out Now it's just a pole that leans a bit -- Janet Tweedy Dalmatian Telegraph http://www.lancedal.demon.co.uk |
