OT - Automatic Internet Explorer Updates
Now and again, we discuss different browsers and our experiences with
them. In case you haven't picked it up, from January, Microsoft will start silently updating Internet Explorer to the latest version - this isn't security updates, it's updating IE7, say, to IE9. More info he http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-16214912. It may be an issue for some people. I use Chrome most of the time but I've found, e.g., that IE is more reliable when I'm doing my online tax return, provided I use IE7. IE8 and IE9 don't work. So if you're concerned, watch out for the tools MS say they're going to offer to prevent this silent update. I'm now stuck on IE7 as it's the only one that reliably works when Chrome won't - major issue with Chrome is with copy and paste. If you stick with WinXP your old PC and your old peripherals will still work. Absolutely! I haven't upgraded from XP because I have HP printers and, despite what HP assure me, that their new drivers for Vista and 7 are fully featured, they are not! David Might be OS-based problem for me. I'm on Vista and 7. XP was/is a good OS. Vista is c**p but the cost of up or downgrading gets in the way of change and as I only use it for low-level graphics/video editing or on a laptop it doesn't matter too much. IME most driver problems with 7 can be overcome. I've got a multifunction fax/printer/scanner that *should" only work either wireless OR wired but not both and not with anything above Vista but I've been able to fix it to work wired with Win7 and wireless with Vista simultaneously. All it takes is a bit of lateral thinking. I know I'm not the only one experiencing problems with IE8/9 and PDFs. Inland Revenue tech support people acknowledged problems with IE8/9 but blame Adobe. Adobe blame Microsoft who blame Adobe and Inland Revenue. Filing a tax return on a BlackBerry or an Android device is, unfortunately, not easy but both cope with the download side so well it almost makes me weep. But Google's continuous fiddling with the code has finally seen me dump Google for StartPage: https://eu.startpage.com/ Advanced search: https://eu.startpage.com/eng/advanced-search.html It uses Google, but doesn't disclose who is searching for what, and there is none of that messing around. Give it a try. If it isn't for you, try something else. -- Jeff |

In article , Granity
writes Janet, go to 'Preferences' (http://www.google.com/preferences) and turn 'Google Instant predictions' to off, you can also set other preferences there as well such as opening each selection in a new tab to save using the back button. Don't forget to click on save preferences when you're done. Blimey Granity what actually switched that on then? I Never had it until about a month ago and it's very distracting to say the least. Thanks for the tip! It does assume that you retain cookies between browser sessions so that Google and other advertisers etc can track everywhere you go on the internet. If like me you have the browser automatically delete all cookies when the browser is closed Google will forget who you are and not know your preferences any more. -- David in Normandy. I can't upgrade two old working Dell WinXP PCs because it isn't possible to put enough memory in them Have you searched on the internet to see if anyone has managed to modify another Canon scanner driver so that it will work with your scanner under Win7? I had the same problem with my Epson 2450 scanner (no 64-bit driver), which still works well on XPH. But after a bit of googling I found a fix which modifies the Epson 4490 scanner 64-bit driver. The 2450 appears in the guise of a 4490 machine in Control Panel "Devices and Printers" on my Win7HPx64, but it now works well with that OS. -- Jeff |

Most companies allow you to reload even ancient drivers. I actually like XP and hate how the new windows hides stuff like my files and folders etc. Well not actually hides them but it's not easy to find the link -- Janet Tweedy Dalmatian Telegraph http://www.lancedal.demon.co.uk |
