Default Lawn ruined

During the night something attacked my lawn digging 6 or so areas. Most
of these areas were quite small, mere scraping but the worse on cover
about a square yard. Nothing deep but the turf remove and scattered aver
several yards. I've never seen anything like this before, though I have
been plagued by rabbits. Any idea as to what it might be, and the best
way to repair th affected areas?

I would have thought it might be badgers? If it's very dry maybe they
are having to dig down for worms?

or rats and other vermin.

A square yard? Rats? Overnight? I'd go more with badgers.

I'm in the Badger camp on this one. Look for fur caught under fences and
gates, it's how they realised they had them visiting at Kew years ago.

Obviously some alien craft touched down on your lawn during the night.
They never clean up properly.

Could be boar. The season is right. If you're rural enough, of course.

Badgers are the prime suspects though foxes will dig when 'worming' as
well.
Might be interesting to look for chafer larvae as well. That won't
help in identifying the culprits but it's just nice to know if its
worms or chafers attracting the badgers. When I was working we
resorted in our desperation to installing electric fences around the
parts of the garden that contained the lawns.

Rats don't attack lawns and scatter turf over several yards. It does sound
like badgers.

You mean, people want to recommence persecution. Badgers have recently become pretty common because persecution has been greatly reduced over the last couple of decades. Until the last 10-20 years, the only badger I ever saw was at an observation post set up by zoologists in a private wood, and they were rare enough that roadkill was rarely seen either. These days I encounter badgers fairly regularly cycling to and from the station in the darker times of the year, and roadkill has become common.

Incidentally, if you have a mole problem badgers will sort it out for you. But, like the Old Lady who Swallowed a Fly, you might then have a badger problem instead.
