![]() Whilst doing a bit of tidying up today (before the wind and rain!) I found tucked behind the copmost bins a couple of old (ie 2009) grow bags. I usually chuck these into the compost bins whilst turning the full one into the empty one, but forgot these. Given that they have had a year or so doing nothing, would the compost they contain be any use as a potting compost or for the flower tubs that swmbo wants every year? If not, it will go into the compost bin at some stage. Thanks -- Roger T 700 ft up in Mid-Wales |

Their fertility will be depleted by the crop that grew in them, but if you add some granular or pellet fertiliser I reckon the compost should be fine to re-use in tubs. I'd also mix in some of your home-made compost. As long as they smell sweet, and haven't turned acid and developed green algae and fungal growth inside. I cheerfully reuse the previous year's growbag stuff in this way, but I've never tried it with two-year-old second-hand material. -- Mike. |

I also often use the grow-bag compost for pots, although always making sure never to pot tomatoes in ex-grow-bag material. But last year all of my grow bags had mushrooms growing under the tomatoes. :-( So the growbags this year got tipped onto the garden (which improve the soil immensely, IME) |
