Default What is this plant?

Hi all,

1st post.
Was wondering if anybody could tell me what this plant is??

Yfrog Image : yfrog.com/5jimg0051ssj - Uploaded by andyjb103

They seem to be everywhere at the moment (June) and they would very much suit a long empty border in our front garden...
Not a great picture, took at Clacton-on-sea in Essex today....

Thanks

Andy

Centranthus ruber, so-called Red Valerian (though it's not a valerian at all)

Widely available, also grows easily from seed. Available in almost-red and white as well as the more usual pink.

It's Valerian, usually considered a wild plant or weed! Normally, it
seems to grow in very dry conditions, such as walls that have no
apparent nourishment in them, so how they'd do as a border plant is
questionable. But they're loved by butterflies and bees so if you do
have a place they'd do well in, they'd be good from that point of view
alone.

For googling purposes, it's red valerian (Centranthus ruber), rather
than (common) valerian (Valeriana officinalis). I've being noticing more
of the latter (in bud, by stream and especially canal sides), than the
former, which is a tolerably common garden escape. But the former is
more common, for example, at Llandudno (but in general it's more
numerous south of a line connecting the Severn with The Wash,
particularly along the coast).

Thank you all for your replies. The border out the front is very dry so hopefully it will do well there.
We are new to gardening so appreciate all your replies.
