Default Oriental Poppy - root cuttings

Last year on GW, Carol showed propagation through root
cuttings. When is the best time of the year to try
this. Has anyone had any success with this method?
Thanks.

After it's finished flowering and the leaves begin to
go, Ray suggests.

Update should anyone gurgle this fred. Took 9 root
cuttings from 3 parent plants and 8 sprouted. No
rooting powder used. I added 2 cups from the compost
heap to half a bucket of allotment soil. The 5" dia
pots (in coldframe) sit in 2" sand, so only need to
water once per week.
Cautionary note - the new leaves emerged in mid August,
but didn't develop hair or their usual crinkly edges,
for another couple of weeks. In fact, they look ed a
bit like weeds!!! Here's today's pic :

Lovely, healthy plants - clever you. I'm glad it
worked. Apparently it's the only way to propagate
Patty's Plum, which is one of the most beautiful
colours going, IMO.

Haven't got that one, although I have got some plums
grown from T & M seed. The cuttings are from the
garden - white, peach and pink. All the surplus end up
on the allotment (50 yards away) ....

I have seen a variety of colours going under the label Patty's Plum!

Try moving the plant as well, you get one plants plus quite a lot of
new ones from any bits of root left in the ground!

So have I ; all of them (in Scotland) so muddy and dull I still can't
work out why people rave about it.

I have wondered if soil type or temperature significantly affects the
colour.

Janet

We wondered if it was because it was such a popular poppy that some were
being sold under the name because of the popularity!
I have seen some stunning correct plants but also some disappointing
murky ones! I am sure Sacha sells only the correct one

Bit like Cephalaria gigantea. That positively thrives on root
disturbance or attempts to get rid of it!

That's one plant that we can always shift on the NGS day in may They are
always in flower and do look marvellous in big clumps.
