Default pak choi

We started our pak choi in the polytunnel in compost and planted them
out a few weeks ago,to our dismay they are now spindly and about 2 ft
tall, before we try again can anyone advise on what we have done
wrong, should we have planted direct into soil rather than compost, many
thanks
