Thought I'd try my luck at garlic having read the discussions in this group.
Having established that it's best to get the garlic bulbs for autumn planting from a garden centre, I happened to be passing one today and in I went. Found the garlic on display just inside the entrance. Then disaster. There was a choice. Help! Five varieties with different strengths of flavour. Cristo (strong) Iberian Wight (full) Thermidrome (full) Lautrec Wight (creamy and smooth) Germidour (mild) Any recommendations? Any to avoid? mark |

We grew Thermidrome and Germidour last season and had an excellent crop of large bulbs. Still looking for Thermidrome this year, can't find it anywhere. Wouldn't describe Germidour as mild either, but then everyone says our onions are lethal so perhaps it's our soil. We tried a "Wight" some years ago and it was dreadful so have avoided anything with that name ever since. -- Regards Bob Hobden just W. of London |

All cost £2.49/pk So that's narrowed it down to three! mark |

I can't advise you on varieties, since names vary so much (often for the same thing!). By all means, get a good known variety to start, but then re-plant some of your own next year. There's a wide belief that garlic gets acclimated to where it's grown, so it will do better in successive years. Plus, not having to buy any more planting stock!
