Default Peeing in the compost

It is a well known fact that urine is a good accelerator for the compost
heap and following quadruple heart by-pass surgery, I have been using a
bottle overnight and this has been duly sprinkled on the heap.
This raises some questions from me ;
1) How does it work?
2) What about the worms already in the heap?
and
3) What effect will the medication I am on be to the heap? (I would imagine
that theoretically the drugs would have been absorbed by the body).

Looking forward to some interesting answers.

Mike

Default Peeing in the compost

I too am on heart meds, (Verapamil and Flecainide) and I also pee in a
bottle and pour it on the compost so I would like more info too. My
understanding is that the body metabolises a certain amount of the
medication I am on while the rest is eliminated through the kidneys, the
same goes for antibiotices. Flecainide toxicity it appears is measured from
a urine smaple. So I am peeing it out. A google search tells me that it is
in tiny quantities but no definitive answer can I find.

Some say that there is plenty of nitrogen in urine, many people dilute and
use to water their plants, or pee directly on the ground under the plants.
Apparently not a good idea to use it if you have a urinary tract infection.
It has not bothered my worms and my current heap is warming up nicely. I am
guessing that a hot compost heap will also have some effect on the meds.
Urine is sterile when it comes out but urea converts to ammonia pretty
quickly. Having said that I will continue to use my pee on the compost until
my wife and kids start to have unexplained slow heartbeats. Call it an
experiment!

Seriously though I use farmyard manure and God knows what gets into it from
the antibiotics and wormers fed to cattle, chickens and horses. I guess it
all just breaks down.

When I lived in Blackpool years ago, the local area was famous for tomatoes,
the best I tasted came from a place which used to be a sewage plant. They
grew wild there from the tomato seeds passed through people's bodies and the
richness of the soil. I guess there was more than just pooh and wee in that
soil but the toms were wonderful!

Not being a pharmacist or heart specialist, and not knowing which chemicals
you are taking I am unable to give you a reply. Sorry.

To get a good compost heap, you need a mix of carbon rich material and
some nitrogen material - I think alot of the "compost activators" are
just materials with lots of available nitrogen. Urine contains Urea which
contains Nitrogen, which can be used by the bugs etc in the heap.

2) What about the worms already in the heap?

I use urine on the compast heap and I have a wonderfull worm population.

Thanks for that information Jim. I am pleased about the worm population as
we always do well with those and I would hate to eradicate them :-(

Now off 'The Bottle' so nothing more in the urine line going into the
compost heap!

Does it count as showing off if you activate the compost whilst standing at
the back door?

That depends on how far your back door is from the comp*st heap.

Extra marks for a direct hit from someone-else's back door.
