pruning tall rose plants...
hi-
I've been clearing out a VERY overgrown garden and after clearing untold brambles/nettles have discovered a few rose plants in the flowerbeds. Unfortunately, due to aforementioned brambles/nettles, these roses stems have had to grow upwards, and are about 6 foot long now (although they bend over). All the buds are on the last 3 feet of the stem : the lower half of the stem appears to have no side branches and no buds - just a means to grow above the previous weeds and brambles. Now I've cleared the flowerbeds, these roses look far too tall and oversized for the beds - I'd like to cut them down, but I've read that you're supposed to prune roses just above a bud. Presumably these rose plants are well settled and ensconced, but how do I make them small again? I'm willing to do something that will cost a year or so before they start looking good - if that's what it takes, but just not sure what to do... Any help please? Thanks! |
