Broad beans peeping through
I sowed 50 broad beans a couple of days after christmas and have
been looking out for signs of growth every day, and to my amazement after the snow melted (yesterday) what do I see? A very close inspection reveals 14 very very young plants, as if someone fired a starting pistol, cos today another 7 are poking out. I had almost given up! As a novice gardener this is wwwwooooooooow Part_No |

I bought them loose at a local "gardening shop" and have about 250 still to sow......cost £1.78, incredible price when you think that suttons etc. charge more than that for a packet of about 50 seeds! Got an allotement last autumn so the rest will go in there when I can get on it. Bad weather has stopped me for weeks now. Take care Part_No |

More usual to sow after Feb or during October/November. Your plants will be very young at a cold time. It may be worth putting a cloche over them. Steve Harris - Cheltenham - Real address steve AT netservs DOT com A useful bit of gardening software at http://www.netservs.com/garden/ Yes thats what I thought too, but a few allotment guys tod me they have been doing this for years, November & February too. I will put something over them though now you that you mention it. I'll leave a few unprotected just as an experiment. Also I have about 250 more to go into my new allotment this month, weather permitting. Thanks for the warning mate Part_No |

What size is it? Ed Ed, the allotment is 10m by 30m 250 beans 6" apart is just over 4 rows when you allow 1/2m for footpath. We like our broad beans.(£1.78 the lot....thats 300 total with the ones I already sowed)) We are going to grow these (attempt to that is) Cabbage, cauliflower, broccoli, brussel sprouts, swede.(brassicas) Potatoes.. earlies(arran pilot), second earlies(maris piper), main crop (maris piper) Parsnip, carrot, beetroot peas. runner beans, onions, sweetcorn, salad Maybe I'm taking on a LOT of work but from my small beginnings last year with my salad crop and a few sucessful spuds and cabbage etc. in our garden at home, and I got the bug and the stuff tasted soooo sweet when cooked minutes from being harvested....mmmmmmmmmm I have some af the above on my window cill in cells 40 per tray, ready to plant on when they are mature enough and the weather lets me! I don't expect everything to go to plan but I'm keen and can learn. take care Part_No |
