Agreed. Hellman's is greasy kid stuff (for the ancient among us).

The message
from Sacha contains these words:

I suppose a 12 bore is out of the question? ;-)) Console yourself with the
thought that half term is nearly over......

I've got a 4-bore...

Which you shoot from the shoulder? :-)

Clue for those of us without webbed feet: Rusty is clearly a puntin',
shootin' and fishin' man.

I thought punt guns had far more than four projectiles and only one bore.

Four-bore relates to the diameter of the bore - 12-bore fits a ball of
one twelfth of a pound of pure lead. 4-bore fits a ball of a quarter of
a pound of pure lead.

Punt guns are usually 2-bore or 1-bore or similar sized tubes, often
made by a blacksmith, and of no 'tidy' fraction of a pound, and have
barrels like drainpipes, and I want one!

They are usually fired fixed in a punt (looks like a long kayak with
aforesaid drainpipe over the bow and projecting over it), but there are
bank guns, which have a swivel on a spike, or rod, and the rod fits into
a hole in a beam or suchlike on the river bank.

Those were sometimes used against marauding Dutchmen.

Well, no, for heffalumps, actually.

Undoubtedly, this would explain why there are so few in Norfolk? ;-)

Boggle. I live and learn. I always understood the heaviest shoulder
fired shotgun to be a 6 bore, and the heaviest widespread one to be
8 bore. Thank you for educating me.

Make your own. It would be nice but you also need a lot of patience to use
one and a punt and I'm not good at lying on my belly for even a few minutes,
never mind all day :-)

I know.

In the Vintage Arms Association ther is a December Vintage Shotgun Clay
Pigeon Shoot, and one of the eagerly awaited treats is a chance to fire
Hob's 2-bore shoulder-gun.

This is a fearsome firepiece which hurls half a pound of shot into the
air, and depending on which way you are pointing the gun when it is
fired, the rotation of the planet is adjusted accordingly.

(FVSVO Adjusted)

I might add that it doesn't necessarily 'kill' the clay every time,
mainly because in fear and trepidation, the novice sometimes shuts his
eyes as he squeezes the trigger...

A direct hit results in a little cloud of lead diminishing as it
assaults the horizon, and a few wisps of dust marking the spot where the
clay had been when it said hello to said cloud.

Rarely does anyone ask for another go...
