Success at last!
Just a small personal triumph. We have been trying for years to get hold of
Rosa hultheimia 'Edward Hyams'. Hyams used to live here and he brought the rose back after he found it in Iran. It was named after him and although it's not an outstandingly gorgeous thing, we really wanted to get one to plant in what was his garden here in Devon. It's taken some years to get one because it's difficult to propagate but at last it's here. I think it was Bob who suggested we try David Austen (it's not in their catalogue) so many, many thanks Bob. -- Sacha http://www.hillhousenursery.co.uk South Devon (remove weeds from address) 'We do not inherit the earth from our ancestors, we borrow it from our children.' |

I look forward to seeing that in flower next year. I grew 'hardii',
another persica hybrid many moons ago and it was a bit of pig to grow well on account of its vulnerability to mildew. Still, the red-eyed, vivid yellow flowers were worth the effort. I'll be interested to see how your plant copes with the current Devon climate. It must have done reasonably well in Hyams' days otherwise he'd have turfed it out. I'm glad to hear it has come home. |

Well, you know what Ray thinks about growing roses in the mild and wet south west! I hope this one will do well for us, too. Ray says Hyams did have it here but I don't think there's any clue as to where he planted it. I'll have to go through his Englishman's Garden again and see if it's in there. -- Sacha http://www.hillhousenursery.co.uk South Devon (remove weeds from address) 'We do not inherit the earth from our ancestors, we borrow it from our children.' |
