Default Speakers for new Gardening Group

Does anyone have any advice for me trying to book speakers and events for our new Gardening Group.

We are based in Liverpool and, as we are a new group, have no contacts to call on. We are keen to get interesting and popular talks onto our programme for next year to encourage more members, we do have funds so can pay modest fees.

I welcome any advice about what has worked well from your experiences.

Thanks

Word of mouth.

Talk about your new group.

Have you written an article for your local newspaper?

Just a couple or so ways.

DON'T OFFER A FEE :-)

Write a 'Letter to the Editor' of your local newspapers telling them about
your new club and invite peole to the next meeting.

It was as the result of a 'Letter to the Editor' in my local newspaper that
the Secretary of a Club wrote to me and asked if I would be their Guest
Speaker one month. You could 'target' people in the same way

If you don't ask, you won't get :-))

People can say 'yes' or 'no'. If it is 'yes', you have a speaker, if it is
'no', try again :-))

Good luck

It's difficult to get good speakers Sadie , especially for smaller
groups. We have a battle on our committee every year between those that
want someone local and therefore cheap and those who would like a bit
more splashed out on interesting speakers. No matter how interesting the
subject is a bad speaker can send you to sleep in 10 minutes! Whereas
some speakers have made any subject really riveting and have held the
audience all through.
There are several what I would call mid level speakers, those who might
cost a bit more in travelling or have experience of wider audiences, as
opposed to very local speakers who only go to meetings such as local
gardening groups or WI or TG nights. Those that brings plants are always
a good audience puller

Among he best we have had have been

Tim Walker, University of Oxford Botanic Garden, Rose Lane , Oxford
very entertaining every time.

Bob Brown of Cotswold Garden plants, always brings superb plants for
sale and also exciting speaker.

Rose Hardy of Hardy's plants, brings plants.

Rosemary Campbell-Preston on scent in the garden.

Kath Brown of Stevington Manor.

Rosemary Wallinger who created or recreated a Gertrude Jekyll garden.

The ex Glasshouse manager of Wisley but can't remember his name, talks
on glass greenhouses and superb on pots and urn planting.

The Hollingsworth's who talk on Roses, Dahlias and Sweet peas.

There are two very good publications one from the RHS that lists
speakers, their subjects and their prices. Also we try to vary the
subjects if we can.

Hope this helps a bit

Janet

Might be worth contacting your local allotment association, the council
should be able to put you in touch. When I had an allotment (admittedly
a long time ago) we used to have speakers and demonstrators. One which
springs to mind was a chap from the local Co-op who was good. Sorry to
say the state the Co-op is in today I would not think they are doing
that sort of thing any more.

Head of the local parks dept
local garden centres
Specialist growers , IE
Fuschia growers
Cactus growers
Dahlia growers
orchid growers
Chrysanths
the list is almost endless

all would be revealed no doubt in flower show catalogues
allotment associations
Southport has a good flower show I understand
http://www.southportflowershow.co.uk...rs-and-traders
Ok so some may bring plants hoping to make a sale but at least would speak
for free, or very little.
A number of small exhibitors enjoy their subject so much would probably be
only too willing.

Best of Luck

No experience, but a couple of ideas:

- Ask at any local (public) gardens - the head gardener might be interested
- Ask at local garden centres - they might give a talk (will probably bring
stuff to buy to)
- Ask people in the group to talk about their special plant (s) /
collections / growing methods

To add to what Jenny has said, I would suggest asking local nurseries rather
than garden centres. They will have a far greater level of knowledge, on the
whole. A garden centre tends to be "just a shop".

Good point Sally ! But I had the impression that GCs in the UK were a lot
more like proper nurseries than they are here in NL. Maybe I'm out of touch
!

The NCCPG usually has very keen speakers as well. Also look at local
clubs and see who they have had / are having. Likewise, the local HPS
etc.
