Is there a consensus of opinion on the best anti-mozzie spray? I'd love to
have some surefire ideas before we head off to Turkey. ;-) -- Sacha http://www.hillhousenursery.co.uk South Devon (remove weeds from address) 'We do not inherit the earth from our ancestors, we borrow it from our children.' |

, I, Marvo, say : Is there a consensus of opinion on the best anti-mozzie spray? I'd love to have some surefire ideas before we head off to Turkey. ;-) There are two sorts, one masks your smell, the other deters them; the latter kind are usually poisonious to some degree and can cause rashes and irritation, and usually contain DEET. It only affects a small proportion of users. I went to Turkey this year and had no mossie spray and didn't get bitten once. I suspect the Turks smell stronger than I. If you're by the sea they probably won't bother you anyway, it's not their ideal habitat. They like ponds and rivers and long grass, basically warm and damp. They can't survive with no shade in extremely hot temperatures, and last time I looked Turkey was like the fires of hell. I don't believe that Turkish mossies carry anything dodgy, like malaria, so the worst you'll get is a bite and an itch. Don't forget to go to Efes if you haven't been already :-) |

It worked very well, in two weeks neither of us were bitten by anything. We've used the same one in French Guiana and Australia. We weren't bitten there either. It needs to be at least 50% content to work. Thanks, Martin. I remember buying something called 'OFF' in Fethiye years ago but can't remember its ingredients. I'll do some research based on the DEET info. I've never stayed in a hotel in Turkey, having only sailed there 3 or 4 times and at sea you don't get the problem so much. Mind you, in harbour..........! I can still smell those Tiger coils! ;-( We're going to be near the Dalyan estuary and have been warned that mozzies can be a problem there, especially in the evening and they really feast on me, so I'd rather be prepared in advance. Just don't trust DEET 100% - I used in Bangladesh a few years back and *still* got bites! |

It only affects a small proportion of users. Oh dear and Martin has just told me how good it is! I need something to deter them I think because they really go for me. I've never found citronella sprays etc. any good, though I know others swear by them. I went to Turkey this year and had no mossie spray and didn't get bitten once. They like ponds and rivers and long grass, basically warm and damp. They can't survive with no shade in extremely hot temperatures, and last time I looked Turkey was like the fires of hell. That's precisely the problem. We're going to Dalyan which is on an estuary and friends, who have a villa there, have warned us that mozzies can be a problem. I don't believe that Turkish mossies carry anything dodgy, like malaria, so the worst you'll get is a bite and an itch. They don't now. First time I sailed there back in 1989 or so, we were told to take malaria tablets and duly started the course before going. We boarded the coach to take us from the airport to our yachts and the guide asked if we had all been good and taken our tabs. We all chorused 'yes' and she said "oh good, well you can stop right now because there hasn't been a case of malaria here for X years"! ;-) Don't forget to go to Efes if you haven't been already :-) I've been, Ray hasn't. I hope we're going to get there because it's *superb*. I am well aware that she doesn't wish to correspond or reply to me, but I feel sure that even she wouldn't shun a perfectly good mossy spray/wipe just because I recommended it. , I, Marvo, say : That's precisely the problem. We're going to Dalyan which is on an estuary and friends, who have a villa there, have warned us that mozzies can be a problem. If you are worried about indoors, definitely take an electric gizmo which plugs in, with the right adapter, and the tablets to fuel it. Bear in mind that the gizmo HAS to be the right way up, with the tablet at the top. On some foreign plug'oles the pins are vertical rather than horizontal and then it is impossible to get it the right way. I have two adapters which put it at right angles. The foreign ones are two-pin so it can then go either way "up". For outdoors, DEET definitely works, it is a good deterrent. Try some before you go and if you get itchy or develop a rash, use something else. Anything which disguises your delicious "I am food" smell does the job, even some suntan oils. Sweat is the big attracter, and, as women don't sweat, I'm surprise they ever get bitten! Even vinegar works. You're actually more likely to get bitten by other things than mossies. There are horseflies in Turkey (and probably everwhere else). I don't believe that Turkish mossies carry anything dodgy, like malaria, so the worst you'll get is a bite and an itch. They don't now. First time I sailed there back in 1989 or so, we were told to take malaria tablets and duly started the course before going. Most modern stuff has no quinine in it, get the proper one. Just in case. It won't help the malaria, but you won't care. Don't forget to go to Efes if you haven't been already :-) I've been, Ray hasn't. I hope we're going to get there because it's *superb*. Try to position yourself near a natural-smelling Turk, if at all possible. I could try lavender because I've got some of those Tisserand roller cap bottles (wonderful for headaches and refreshment in this weather) I'll remember to pack those! -- Sacha http://www.hillhousenursery.co.uk South Devon (remove weeds from address) 'We do not inherit the earth from our ancestors, we borrow it from our children.' |
