raised beds
Having just moved house and eventually got round to creating 5 raised beds
each 16 x 4 feet I wonder if I have missed the bus for planting fruit and or veg this year ? Also I am building the beds over a lawn.....would you take the grass out of the raised beds ( edging will be about 10ins high ) or turn it over before putting in good topsoil /compost / manure ? Any suggestion for things to plant in over the next two weeks that might still result in a good edible crop ??? many thanks Barry |

There is still time to plant leeks seeds for harvesting over Winter. Suggest you have a look through the seed packets at the garden centre and browse the planting dates, there are quite a few things that can still be sown. David. |

Barry, we built a raised veg bed over grass (I wouldn't call it lawn). We did not remove the grass but, following advice on this group (ISTR from Janet Baraclough who posted here at the time), we covered the grass with heavy cardboard, then piled in well rotted horse manure, then put topsoil on top. The cardboard acts as a weed suppressant and will rot down eventually. The worms do the rest. We have not had any problems with grass growing in the raised bed, but the levels do of course drop over the first year or two and have to be topped up. It was good advice and saved a lot of effort (I have to confess it was Tony's effort, not mine!) -- Sally in Shropshire, UK Burne-Jones/William Morris window in Shropshire church with conservation churchyard: http://www.whitton-stmarys.org.uk |

Any suggestion for things to plant in over the next two weeks that might still result in a good edible crop ??? Have a look round garden centres/shops for some leek plants. Dib a nice deep hole, put in a leek and carefully fill the hole with water, do no more. Plant them about 15 cms apart. If it ever stops raining, water them by filling the dibbed holes. Geoff |

Depending on the variety they will also 'heart up' into tasty cabbages. We are still eating ours that I planted last year. David. |

They usually have masses, and the cardboard is nice and thick. -- Sally in Shropshire, UK Burne-Jones/William Morris window in Shropshire church with conservation churchyard: http://www.whitton-stmarys.org.uk |
