Default Sigh, wrecked strawberries

First decent day for a while, so decided to pick some strawberries. Most
are lying rotting at the bottom of the plants, beaten off by the
horrendous rain I guess. :-(

I've never succeeded with strawberries for that reason. This year I planted
some in a hanging bag and so far all but two have survived and are fruiting
(although not ripening yet). I don't suppose we'll have more than a helping
each but if they're good it will have been a learning experience.

I know how you feel. Due to an invasion of weeds in the strawberry
beds, we replanted the lot last autumn, BUT forgot to put straw down
between the rows. Today we have lots of red strawberries, caked in
mud.

A few of mine have gone nice and red but before we've got to them the slugs
have. I'm beginning to get extremely frustrated!

I've got 2.5kg cooking away in the preserving pan. Should have 7 or 8
jars of jam later this evening...

Hrumph! You can go right off some folk :-(

Mind you, cooking strawberries ruins them in my opinion.

7 and a half jars eventually. Had to do something with them, I
couldn't quite manage that lot on my own. :-)

When I was young my Mother always used to put the developing
strawberries into a jam jar on its side, it kept the birds off, the
rain off and helped then to ripen quicker.
I don't think it had anything to do with brainwashing them as to thier
fate when ripe.
