More rosemary
Well, we'll get the confusion out of the way first - Ray and I were thinking
of two different rosemaries in two different gardens, as things turn out! I was convinced both were in one garden but clearly I'm wrong as we found today. And the owners of both houses are abroad so the plot got a lot thicker. However, we went over to Salcombe today to the house he was thinking of and took a photo of the rosemary there. Olivier Filippi says he seriously doubts it's R. Barcelona because that one gets damaged by frost even in his trial garden and he says it's not worth photographing. However, I've sent him a photograph of the Salcombe one and promised him some cuttings if it isn't one he has. He has never heard of Jackman's Prostrate, either and Burncoose have no photo of it. Filippi has asked for cuttings of that, if I can get some and has promised us some cuttings of new cultivars of his, in return, which is very kind. Burncoose have also had a photo from me and I'm waiting to hear back from them. They say the one in their car park is Jackman's Prostrate but they have no idea of its provenance and say only that is has been around a long time, so it's certainly possible that it's got more than one name and that the nursery in the east of UK got it from Burncoose under that name. I hope our photos of the Salcombe one will be on our web site soon but if anyone wants an email pic, let me know. Ray thinks it's possible/probable that the other rosemary I was thinking about is the same one (the two couples are friends and neighbours) but because it's on a much lower wall in the second garden, it runs across the path and on down another wall, IIRC. The one we photographed this afternoon is on a wall that is probably about 10' high in places and it hangs right down to the ground where it has been trimmed just to touch the tarmac drive. The wall is rendered, so it isn't rooting and sending out new plants from any cracks or joints in the wall; it hangs in a solid curtain. -- Sacha http://www.hillhousenursery.co.uk South Devon http://www.discoverdartmoor.co.uk/ (remove weeds from address) |

As I bumble my way through gardening, barely recognising a dandelion, I hate these expert questions, it shows up my ignorance too well. ;-( You mean you don't want to know what variety of dandelion you have? ;-) This one could run and run, believe me. In the end, I can see us ending up sending it to Wisley, or something! It's just curiosity really because it's such a marvellous plant and so unusual. Ray used to know a couple, both botanists, who could stand looking at one plant for half an hour or more, arguing as to its *precise* identity and then send him a 6 page dissertation on why it was what they'd decided it was! I had two such people round one evening for a BBQ, I've never invited them again, they listed every single problem with my plants, which, according to them, were all sufferfing from something or other including my phlox which had wireworm, I'd only heard of woodworm up until then! It's a bit like going round a garden with a truly manic enthusiast and I do love seeing other peoples' gardens! But in one public garden we go to sometimes we used to almost dread seeing the past curator because we would be there for hours, looking at virtually every leaf of every plant. -- Sacha http://www.hillhousenursery.co.uk South Devon http://www.discoverdartmoor.co.uk/ (remove weeds from address) |

Ah the "See! - On this form the attenuation is 0.225mm. longer than the more common variety, but the petiole is generally 0.316mm. shorter" syndrome. Short of a using magnifying glass it is impossible to see the difference and horticulturally, there's very little point in differentiating the forms anyway. I'll never forget a desparately hot and steamy day in the '70's being virtually dragged around a botanical gardens by its hugely knowledgable, but desperately pedantic curator. An utterly charming chap in many ways, but after 5 hours my head was spinning. I never went again and tactfully avoided responding to subsequent invitations. |

Back out to the Carribean next month and an the new Cunard Queen Victoria at the end of the year if she is built on time :-}} However I do have a lot in the pipeline so you never know :-)) Don't quite know what is coming, but the World is in the pipeline :-)) And no more nasty comments, I would rather talk to you about your travels. Not nasty comments at all. Just the truth :-)) Unfortunatly, some people don't like the truth!! However, 'Owners' are a breed unto themselves :-((( One of the Cruising newsgroups I subscribe to might be of interest to you if you wish to deal with nice people. Now then, no more comments about owners, you are far more interesting to read where these comments are omitted. Did you see the prog about the Isle of Wight last night? I have never been there but it looked beautiful. No I didn't see it. I dropped 5 ranks in the Civil Service to get back here and never regretted it. I have two children here on the Island who have NO intention of leaving and two who are busting a gut to get back. The trouble is they are in high powered positions with mortgages and that makes it difficult these days. But they will do it, the Island has that magnetic effect :-)) Mike -- .................................................. .........
