Bonsai
I have purchased a bonsai plant recently.
After having read all the care instructions, I am still left with some queries. Does one need to pot on? If so, do I go for the next size up? When should I pot on, if necessary? |

Bonsai
No need to pot on as the re will just grow bigger, If you must do this treat
it like a big tree and keep root disturbance to a minimum and keep the tree in it's root ball. The bigger the pot the bigger the tree which defeats the object of Bonsai. Col. Most trees are fine outdoors, unless they are marked "indoor bonsai". Do you want to keep it at the size it is or do you want it to grow bigger. The general principle with Bonsai is that when they are mature they only need repotting every few years, and into the same size pot. Therefore you prune the roots and repot with a little fresh compost. This is done in early Spring before growth starts. They need regular feeding and watering. If it is a young tree and you want it to grow bigger, you can pot it on into the next size pot. Get a good book from the library. There is a lot to learn, but first you must be sure you know how to keep your new tree healthy. Because they are in small pots they need watering every day if it does not rain in the growing season, and never let it dry out. Good luck. Pam in Bristol |

What type of tree was it? Indoor or outdoor? Deciduous or evergreen? Not sure what kind of tree. I bought it from Aldi last week. It is a five year old plant. It has broad leafed leaves on it ATM. The instructions were not too bad. 15 - 25 degrees c. Do not allow the plant to dry out. Use bonsai feed. Prune in spring. Keep compost moist, but not wet. Put outdoors in summer if required. Avoid bright sunshine. If it is a young tree and you want it to grow bigger, you can pot it on into the next size pot. Get a good book from the library. It only stands about 8" tall at the moment, so it looks like I would need to pot-on if I required a larger plant. |
