Rotary Petrol Lawnmower
My mountfield emblem 16 has probably died, having given 20plus years of
service. Not worth spending about £100 on a service ( not a funeral one) so I'm looking to replace with something similar. Here's the specification I want. IT MUST BE Min. 16inch / 41 cms blade Self push and rear roller, NOT 4 WHEEL. Anyone seen any bargains One of the cheapest I've seen is a Hayter Spirit £239. TIA, if you can help. |

They both use the rock B&S engines. |

What does "probably died" mean? Runs for 20-30 seconds then cuts out. I'm going to try the simple thingss like clean the filter and swop the fuel , but after that.............. As I said it doesn't owe me anything! |

Are you wanting another mower that will give you 20+ years of service or are you looking for the cheapest roller mower you can find? If it is the latter then the Spirit is probably the cheapest you'll find with a roller or there is the slightly larger Mountfield for another £100. Please don't expect to get even half the service out of these machines that you did out of the Emblem. Mountfield don't exist as a company anymore, it is just branded machines from the Italian and Swedish factories and the roller machines are the continental four wheel machines with the rear wheels removed and a roller hung on the back. The Hayter Spirit is a budget machine, with an A-frame alloy body with a plastic mould on top. You get what you pay for, don't expect it to be as robust as the Emblem. If you want a machine that is comparable to your old machine then you need to be looking at either the Hayter Harrier 41 range or the Honda HRX426 range and expect to pay around £500. |

To most people, a mower is a mower, very few people own a petrol mower (in comparison to the size of the UK market of mowers) and even fewer own a roller version because the bulk of the market is at the cheaper end where it is full of European and American spec four wheel machines. You're going to have to accept that, what is obvious to you, is not, to everybody else. |

" but also to be fair folks here are generally only trying to help. If I was on a budget and had a perfectly acceptable machine that met all my requirements but the only problem was that it was starting to cut out then personally I'd be looking to repair it rather than throw it away and buy a new one. |

I have a good quality "Harry" with a diecast deck and huge grass box, 19" cut. Anything similar would cost me a fortune. When my engine died (valve seats came loose in the head) I got a replacement Briggs and Stratton and dropped it in. It has been going another 10 years since. A lot cheaper than a new mower - at the time it was 45 quid against 350. Briggsbits do the full retail price, but it is possible to get them much cheaper than that. My local tool hire shop sold me one recently for a mixer - official price 120, they sold it to me for 75. That said, If you want a new mower I would recommend a Harry, although only one model in the current catalogue has a rear roller rather than 4 wheels. www.fgm.uk.net appear to be the importer |
