Default next lawn weed

Thanks for the help identifying my mouse ear chickweed infestation in my
new lawn. After several hours of surprisingly pleasurable hand-pulling,
I have pretty much eradicated it.

I'm now turning my eye to the old portions of my lawn. One patch is
infested with the weed pictured he
http://coffeewithbarretts.com/weed.html

It has much stronger roots than the mouse ear and certainly resists
being pulled up. It's pretty solid over about a square meter area.
Suggestions?

Yeah, it does. I hadn't looked at the last two pics.

Do you get knotgrass in lawns?

Knotgrass or Knotweed?
Looks like some form of polygonum.

Huh, I thought you had it with the self-heal ID, especially since I
vaguely remember the purple blossoms appearing last year. Do you really
think it isn't?

Once the ID is figured out, what's the suggestion for reducing it? It's
tough going to dig the roots out -- will pulling at ground level give
the grass a chance to grow back?

Looks like it to me. Selective weedkiller +/or hand pulling. Feeding
the lawn and setting the mower a bit higher should also help - it
tends to be indicative of a poverty stricken environment.
Actually I quite like it, I find an all grass lawn a bit boring ;-) )

No, I don't really think it isn't (in other words, I think it may well
be but nevertheless admit the possibility that I might be wrong), and if
you can remember purple flowers, it makes it a whole lot more likely
than polygonum.

I don't think the leaf veination is quite right for polygonum.

I agree. When I first looked I couldn't see any sign of a scalloped edge on
the leaf, but on closer examination think there is. So I withdraw my
suggestion.
