Sorbus leaves going yellow
I have a Sorbus 'Embley' tree which I planted about a year ago and I have
noticed that some of the leaves are going a sort of mottled yellow. It does not look like a chlorosis problem as the leaves are not completely yellow and they look very healthy. According to the catalogue the leaves should be deep green. Apart from this the tree looks very healthy. It is well watered and in well drained soil. Could someone please advise me what the problem may be? Many thanks Les |

A tree planted a year ago should be making a lot of new feeding roots, far afield in all directions from the original planting hole, spreading out into the surrounding soil to find their own water, minerals and nutrition. If you keep watering it, (or feeding it artificially) you're encouraging the new root growth to head for the soil surface in the watered area, which is not in the tree's best interests. A few years ago a young tree died on me (not in the same location as my current problem). When I dug it up I found that the roots were bone dry. I thought that I had watered it enough. This time I have been particularly careful to make sure that it did not suffer from lack of water and now I have the opposite problem. You just cannot win!! Les |

Les You could always use the hosepipe in the ground method for things you plant in future. Put a length of hosepipe into the ground beside your new, young tree and water through that. The water goes directly to the roots. -- Sacha www.hillhousenursery.co.uk South Devon email address on web site I never thought of that. Thanks for the advice. Les |
