This may be common practice, but I've just discovered it.

Place a loo roll inner over a weed to isolate it before spraying weedkiller
down the tube onto it.

This prevents drift onto neighbouring plants.

You could also use a weedkiller soaked sponge as we do and wipe it
onto the plant leaves

Wearing gloves, I presume?

Good idea, and thanks for it.

or you could place the toilet roll over the weed and then try and wipe it
with the sponge.

Surely if you have identified a single plant it's less bother just to
pull it up than mess about with cardboard and nasty chemicals?

Yes if it's easiest, but some things, e.g. docks, can have really deep
tap roots that are impossible to pull and difficult to dig right out
especially if among other plants, and they'd just grow again if you
don't take out all the root. Sometimes a surgical strike with glyphosate
is the answer.

Yep. That's the types I use it on.

not if it is bindweed - I've dug this out of empty borders and separated it
from plants in borders where I've been able to dig up the plants but if you
cannot dig up the plants then spraying the stuff seems the only way to
weaken it sufficiently (I know that repeatedly pulling it up will work
eventually but it seems to take years that way and I always end up missing
bits.)

works just as well with the sawn off top of a bottle, as the sides prevent the spray drifting onto other plants
