James, welcome to the forum.

This very explicit site http://tinyurl.com/9vzy9 will guide you through
much of what you need to know about tomato growing, but it does not
explain the very considerable difference between growing tomatoes in the
greenhouse and outdoors so I am going to presume that you intend to grow
them outdoors.

I started them off in late Febuary on a warm window ledge, by late May they
were all a foot high and went into an unheated greenhouse for a fortnight
until they were planted in mid May directly into the soil inside the GH
(actually 2 GH, one glass, one plastic)
Those in the glasshouse are spindley and have poor fruit and growth, those
in the plastic (which gets less sunlight) are immense triffids with long
trusses of bulging fruits, sometimes as many as a dozen on each truss and
each tom is the size of a golf ball.

aside from the light conditions, the glass house was dug over every year for
the past 5 yrs, the other was left to grow wild with nettles an bindweed
growing from floor to roof, the nettles certainly seem to have done the soil
a world of good - the chillis planted at the same time as the toms in both
GH are also very different, those in the 'nettle house' are 4ft tall and
again covered in unripe fruits, their counterparts are a foot and half tall
and looking a bit gangly.

The moral of the story? - plant them in 'virgin' soil if possible,
preferably soil that has been overgrown for some time.
