Recommendations for Roses along a pikcet fence and mail-order Suppliers?..................
Hi folks:
I am an experienced gardner but new to roses. We live in Concord, MA about 20 miles northwest of Boston. We are installing a 40" picket fence around most of our 100 yr. old cottage style farmhouse. This will be a lot of fence and we'd like to plant a lot of rose bushes along much of it. Much of the fence runs East/West and a bit of it is North/South. We are partial to older varieties but understand that many (all?) of these bloom only once a season, which probably won't work for us-at least not as an exclusive variety. So, what would you plant if you were me? Finally, would you recommend some quality growers who ship via mailorder, as well? In any case-access to your expertise will be most appreciated. Thanks in advance- Joshua Secunda |

I'm not even close to your zone so I can't recommend any specific roses for you, but I want to clear up the misconception that most of the old roses are once bloomers. Certainly some of them are, but there are thousands of varieties that are repeat bloomers. There are many repuatable online growers. One of the first that comes to mind for your project is Ashdown Roses, not only do they have great roses, they are very knowledgeable and willing to share that via a phone call. Uncommon Roses and Chamblees are two others with good roses and good service. Good luck with your project, I think it sounds beautiful. I love the cottage garden look, even though it doesn't fit my ranch style nearly as well as a 100 yo farmhouse. |

I have said it here many times, "Go talk to you local rose society" and/or a
consulting rosarian in your area. These can be found at www.ars.org. (American Rose Society) There is more knowledge and experience through the ARS than any other source available to you. Since I live in zone 7/8 I can't guarantee what I'm about to say but--- Hamp--I just wanted to say, WELCOME! We need more rose growers from the swamps to weigh in! (I am in Raleigh, NC, zone 7B). Most of the rose groups are dominated by Californians, and the difference in climate between there and the southeast (even the northeast) is so great that much of the commentary is useless to us swamp dwellers. Mark Chamblee of Chamblee Roses gave a presentation in Jackson, MS recently ... Love Chamblees and Roses Unlimited, the latter out of SC. If you have not tried RU, I hope you do. Really healthy plants on their own roots, and they come in a handy one-gallon size that makes more sense than the 3-gallon monsters or the "bands" some places sell. |
