Holes in Water lily leaves........and other ?
Ok, I have a lot of lilys with what looks like hail damage, but it is
not. The damage looks like a hole with about 270 degrees of its circumference seperated from the lilly and a small portion that is still attached., sort of like a large hole that is punched in a paper but with a little portion of the material left like a hinge......I have looked and looked for bugs, but nothing that I could see, its certainly not hail,,,,,,so what is it thats making these holes and whats the cure........... Awhile back I had ranted and raved about how nice an vigorous the Charlies Choice water lily is.....It is continually pushing out new leaves, which get to about the size of a soft drink can bottom at the most.....say 2, 2 1/2 inches or so. Its stems and leaves are always unruly and makes one tangled mess.......Space is not a problem, neither is the size pot its planted in.....Its fertilized with "real lily fertilizer" not tomatoe stakes.......has a minimum of 8 hours sun mostly more, and the water temp where its at is mid to high 80's ......Absolutely no current or water splaching on it either....At any given time you can look at the crown and see dozen and dozens of new leaves forming and starting to push upwards. OK, now the main problem is once a leaf is on the surface, it lasts no more than 5 to 7 days and its rotted and black....I had been watching this plant very closely as leaves virtually rotted over night.........and from the time a leaf hits the surface no matter what size it is, its blac,k and mushy and rotted within a week....yes it puts up a heap of leaves constantly, more than any other lily I have ever seen......I just wonder if this perpetual leaf machine is like this due to its short term life expectency of its leafs or what? I have knocked back sunlight to a minimum of 4 or 5 hours, and tried all sorts of other things, but the results never vary, they still rot within a week......the blooms are fantastic with every day of the three day period getting a different color, but its sure a mess keeping leaves cleaned up off just this one plant...........Thnking seriously of pulling it out and putting it in the other large aquarium, since it has yet to even fill 1/2 the top surface of a half barrel......More like maybe a 12 to 16 inch diameter at most. Any suggestions on the holes in the regular hardy tuype lilys and the rotting leaves on the Charlies Choice lily appreciated. ============================================== Put some color in your cheeks...garden naked! If not hail, how about this critter, the China Mark Moth? http://www.victoria-adventure.org/wa...ars/page1.html In my encyclopedia of WG plants by Speichert he mentions China Mark Moth, I suspect from a picture in here and your description below that this caterpillar is causing that plant to have problems too. Called the nursery where I got the Charlies Choice, and they asked a
few questions, and wa then told to bring the plant back in, which I did......Thier vendor looked at it, and later on I was called and told to come pick out another plant......The nursery nor vendor had any clue as to why leaves and stems would rot within a few days....so I picked up anoher Helvola, which has some nice growth, and fits perfectly in the half barrel. In just a few days it produced 8 buds with 4 of them opening this week, and should have more today.... So, no more charlies choice, at least not from that nursery....... ============================================== Put some color in your cheeks...garden naked! Update on the Charlies Choice..........Vendor wanted to see it, so
since i had it pulled out and replaced it with another lily (Helvola) I carried it to the nursery when they called and said the vendor was there.. He said he has had quite a few Charlies Choice do the same thing this year for some reason or other, and told me to just trash it, and go pick out any other lily....... Since the crown had lots of very tiny new growth, I told him I would like to see if this plant placed in aperfectly controlled water conditions would have any better results, so we cut off a portion and I carried it back home and placed it in a 20 gal tank with some guppies with full specturm lighting.....I also carried home a Fabiola (Pink Beauty) as a replacement for the Charlies Choice. ============================================== Put some color in your cheeks...garden naked!
