Bettas in Pots
I blame Roy for this idea. ;o)
He mentioned having a betta pair in his barrel pond. So I'm wondering what is their temperature tolerance? I have 3 large pots that probably hold 20 gallons with some plants, an a betta in 1 or 2 of them sounds like a plan. Normal temps currently this time of year are 85-90*F days, down to 55-60*F at night. ~ jan ~Power to the Porg, Flow On!~ |

Well Bettas are tropical fish and prefer water in the range of72 to 82 deg F or so.. That said I have kept bettas outside before when my water was in the high 60's and did not have a problem.....but it was only for a few days.....I would try and make sure temp stays in the range to be safe..... One thing to be aware of Betta's are jumpers, so if it stays in the container for about 2 or 3 days without doing the suicide jump, they usually stay put.. Its unreal how nice they grow outside in a tub or pool. Only bettas I keep in small containers (1 qt jars) are the young males until I get them ready to go to the petstores. I them put them in plastic bags for transporting them. I keep all the young female in one tank or kiddie pool. You hear a lot on how you need to seperate the male from the female after spawning. I have already had a few that we left the female in with the nest and the male and she even helped a bit with keeping the fry in the bubble nest. I have had one male betta do nothing but keep building a nest and would repeatedly spawn with numerous females and use the same bubble nest. Talk about not giving up, it was just one steady fry factory. The container even had numerous fry of all sizes swimmng around, and no signs of aggression from either parent....It go to the point I had to remove the adults as I was getting paranoid, and tired of baby sitting everyone.
