Default Hello Everyone

It's that time of year again, when thoughts turn to ponds being unfrozen and
useable. Well, for me anyway w/a small one here near Boston.

It's been a while since I've posted but you guys/gals have always been a
wealth of info!

I'm thinking of expanding, I've got a shallow bird-pool going on right now,
about 4 feet long by 3 feet wide. It's only about 10" deep and from there
comes up to a shallow end where the birds bathe. I want to put in a
preformed liner, dig a hole, plop it in, be done BUT I want a shallow bird
bath end ... does such a thing exist in preform? I haven't found one, but
again, you guys/gals are the experts. It's still not going to be very big
or deep - it's in a small garden area. I guess I'm looking for a pre-form
w/a shallow end. :-)

I've got three small goldfish (they must have come on plant I bought last
year since I didn't put them there) and I'd like it to be a bit deeper for
them when I put them out, since they're so used to me now they'll be an easy
target for something to snack on, they'll probably come right to the surface
for Mr./Mrs Raccoon where last summer they took off at any sign of movement.
This was low maintenance last year, I've got no big filtration, just a
fountain w/a small filter attachment and I'd like to keep it that way. I'll
probably just have to buy a bigger fountain.

Oh yes, and I'll be putting in plenty of plants!

TIA,
LeeAnne

Hmmmm...
I haven't *seen* any preforms with shallow ends...
I've seen one (a nursery pond) that has a shallow
ridge running all around the edge to put plants in small pots on for sale. I
noticed that someone had one in their backyard here recently that showed up on
a webpage (I didn't think they were for sale to the general public). Our
nursery has one that they drag around the property to where ever they decide to
put pond stuff that year.

The Costco here had a pond 'set' that included a waterfall stairstep type
attachment. If you put a few pebbles in that the birds would have secure
footing.

You might have to take a Saturday and tour the various garden centers and
nurseries and see what they have available.
Nurseries would be a good place, when they aren't too busy, they might be able
to show you
their catalogs from which they order. Maybe they could put in a special order
for you.

kathy - (who is supposed to be studying math to
pass a teacher skills test and finding ways to avoid confronting the concept of
parallel polygonal ends, sounds rude to me ;-)

Use EPDM liner. It's cheaper and you can shape it exactly the way you want.

As for filtration, put a trickle tower in the shallow end, maybe sitting on
a flat rock so it's out of the water. The only filtration I have in my
small (6'x4'x2.5' deep) pond is a plastic bucket of pea gravel that the 100
GPM pump is buried in and a three gallon terra cotta pot 'trickle tower',
also full of pea gravel, that I plant things in (snapdragons right now).
The hose from the pump goes up the drain hole in the pot and drains back
into the pond. The fish are happy and the water is clear.

Default Hello Everyone

How about plunking in a pre-form, but creating a small "stream" running to
it for the birds to bathe? The "head stream" could be a shallow depression
with the water burbling up and out of the ground, flowing through a river
rock lined stream, dumping into the preform . . . a little woodlands theme?
Most pre-forms are only 18" deep, but it would give your fish a little more
safety.

I was always the guy that sat in the back of the classroom, and as such I
have a question for you. What geometric figure from the limit of a regular
polygon as the number of sides approach infinity?

answer is below.

answer: circle

Are you kidding???
I asked one of the seniors in high school who lives at my house and he said,
'circle'.
Checked the answer and danged if he wasn't right! I may not be a math whiz but
I can raise them.... (with help of engineer DH gene pool!)

Yes, that's the one.
Our nursery puts smaller potted aquatic
plants around the edges that are for sale.

The answer to the problem is not in the math, but in the understanding of
the question.
A regular polygon is a polygon that has all sides and angles the same.

4 sided regular polygon, will look like a square.
5 sided regular polygon, will look like a pentagon
6 sided regular polygon, will look like a hexagon
7 sided regular polygon, will look like a heptagon
8 sided regular polygon, will look like a octagon

By the time you get to an octagon, you can see that if the lines get smaller
and the angles between the 2 lines get wider that eventually it will look
like a circle.
