last summer I had 4 55 gal barrel filters in line and for settling tanks
a vegggie filter at the end of line. this weekend when I tore it all
down I had about 1 pt of dried muck at the bottome of the 4 barrels and
then pulled a third of a yard wheelbarrow full of muck out of the veggie
filter
who would have thought the settling tank would be the last in line?

John, My barrels had several inches at the bottom, and the 3 in-line kiddie
pools had up to 2" of muck (least in the 3rd). Even the pond at the base of
the U-shaped falls has muck in it. I am slowing the flow this year in the 3
x 8 long veggie filter to see if the hyacinth roots will catch the muck. I
will go with the 45-minutes-to-get-through rule. Water goes in one end and
exits at the top of the other end. The veggie filters take about 25 minutes
each for the water to pass through (based on how long it takes for the pool
to fill. They all drain from the bottom into 2" pipe, so it is not a
problem.

Let us know how your new veggie bog works!

Happy spring!

Jim

Hi John,

I tried copying the address from below. It took me to the site. Try again.
Let me know if it fails. I will be updating with some new photos pretty
soon.

John,

I believe you mentioned finding muck in all your barrel filters? If so, how
fast (gph) was the flow thru the filter? I think anything beyond 1,500 gph
thru one 55 gallon barrel filter (3,000 gph thru parallels) perhaps drives
the muck thru the media?

Because the fish load was so low I've been lazy about cleaning the
pre-filter at the Demo Pond and it had a lot of muck in the bio-filters
this last fall, due to the pre-filter channeling. This year I plan to clean
the pre-filter as I do at home, once every 6 weeks and hope that helps.

the two sets were pushin 2400gph ea and in series of four barrels

I had some pretty fine filter mat in the first one, and
coarse in the next 3 pretty much it was all fish poo and dead algae,
even after I dried it all winter its still greenish of course I dont
have a leaf problem here so that didnt contribute, messing around in the
pond today I have maybe a 1/16 inch muck on the liner bottom
since the "rutz" version of your filters did work so well last summer
coupled with the bog, Im keeping them in storage while I experiment with
the giant veggie filter(bog) this summer curious to see which seems to
work best for me. Mechanical and veggiebog or just veggiebog
after getting rid of the 500+ gold fish last summer, I thought I had
about 5o Koi left, almsot got a count yesterday I think closer to 80-90
left smallest about 8 in and largest 24 or so still a bit much right
now(thank goodness pond is about 15000 gallons)
and as I want to add about 20 more butterfly Koi to the mix. so will
most likly end up building another pond for the butterflys.:-) I still
have the liner from the first pond in storage so all i have to do is dig
