Default pump question

Does it bother my goldfish with the fountain pump running 24/7 ? The
output is adjustable and the pump is rated 600 GPH, in a 20 gallon
barrel liner. I do not find the 2 goldfish getting disturbed by any
turbulence with the fountain height (2-3") that I prefer, but does the
splash/bubble/noise get to them?

When I turn the pump off I can see the fish out more often but then it
could be because I am having a better ability to see them.

I had reduced it to a slow trickle until I can get better answers.

Does it shorten the pump's life to restrict it's output?
Does it generate more heat?

* In something as small as a barrel I would say the current would tire them.

The
output is adjustable and the pump is rated 600 GPH, in a 20 gallon
barrel liner.

** I have one about that size for my 500 gallon grow-out tank. I have the
outflow from the filter FALLING straight down so there's no real current for
them to deal with. I can't imagine a 600 gph pump for a 20 gallon barrel.

I do not find the 2 goldfish getting disturbed by any
turbulence with the fountain height (2-3") that I prefer, but does the
splash/bubble/noise get to them?

** Only they can answer that one. ;-)

When I turn the pump off I can see the fish out more

** Because there's no current to fight.......

often but then it
could be because I am having a better ability to see them.

I had reduced it to a slow trickle until I can get better answers.

** I was told it would because of the back pressure. A 200 gph pump would
be quite adequate for a 1/2 barrel.

Does it generate more heat?

** I can't comment there as I don't restrict mine.
