Tree Leaf Identity please?
I have a tree in my yard - it is about 9 feet tall now I suppose... but
I have no idea what it is... I have never seen it flower or bear fruit or anything like that... Can anyone identify what it is from this leaf? The photo is a scan and it is a little deceiving - the lobes are deeper than they look in the photo - it sort of hides that when it is pressed flat between the glass of the scanner. http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f2...stery_leaf.jpg Thanks.. Looks like an American Elm. -- Cheers Todd www.flickr.com/photos/todd_baker |

Looks like an American Elm. Not an elm. In elms the base of the blade generally is clearly unequal. http://www.mntca.org/Reference_manual/Tree_info/Images/Ulmaceae/ulmus%20americana%20-%20WS%20good%20-%20leaf%20on%20grid%209-15.jpg http://www.mntca.org/Reference_manual/Tree_info/Images/Ulmaceae/ulmus%20americana%20-%20WS%20-unequal%20leaf%20base%20-%20may%205.jpg Perhaps it's a hawthorn, _Crataegus_ sp.? They're pretty diverse in leaf shape, but serrate/lobed leaves a bit like this leaf are common. Is the tree thorny at all? cheers |
